A Guardian investigation reveals Dollar General and Family Dollar stores often fail to honor their shelf prices – charging more at checkout for everything from frying pans to Frosted Flakes
Jesus christ, some of these things rang up >50% more expensive. Do people really not notice stuff like this? I’d love to say I catch it every time it happens, but that’s probably some type of bias. I’ve definitely caught it several times over the years.
It’s also illegal for them, at least in my state but I hope in all states, to not honor the shelf price when pointed out. They are also required to update the shelf price in a timely manner afterward. Can’t remember the exact time but I want to say it’s a day or two. If they don’t, you can report them.
I’ve had this happen a few times. And at Home Depot the employee ripped off the shelf tag off right in front of me. Honored the price, of course.
Considering sales tax isn’t included, so your total always rings up different than your math, and it’s really hard to accurately math out because some products aren’t taxed, yeah, I could see people not realizing that’s what happened. Especially if the things that went up were low priced items.
Idk about Dollar General and such, but every place I go to tells you the subtotal (before tax) and total (after tax). I find it it be pretty easy but I’m also paying attention to prices as they ring up.
That’s fair, I really haven’t looked to see the breakdown, I also watch the scan. But I’ve dealt with the public, and most people genuinely don’t seem to be paying that much attention… to anything… :)
