There would never be a show called Gossip Guys.
It’s hard for me to convey how or why it’s a gendered term but this statement is so true, good for pointing it out.

Exactly, I really think the use of the word in a new comm is unhelpful for the stated goals of ‘reducing misogyny’ and white cishet vibes. I suppose not everyone sees the term that way, truly all sorts of people do gossip, but the term itself has typically seemed to be used to reinforce societal misogyny in my view.
I don’t recall who said it but wasn’t the name gossip picked partly because they wanted to emphasize the frivolousness of the posts that would go there? Like they were begrudgingly maintaining part of the old dunk place but wanted to shame it. I agree, in my experience it has “effeminate” and frivolous connotations and is used in media to refer to what those clique-y and rude women do behind your back.
Rename the comm and move on would be great, the issue users took was there was more to it than that and multiple reasons given, behind the scenes discussions, but yeah it was all blown out of proportion I think
What helps me is considering we are all hardly one step above wild animals. We do what is instinctual and based on our conditioning and upbringing which no one has any choice in. If a dog was raised to attack people, I wouldn’t get upset at that dog when they attack people, it’s what they have been made to do by outside influence.
I really believe most people aren’t so selfish and reactionary as 4channers or whatever though. If everyone gives you this feeling maybe it would be helpful to spend time around different people somewhere else?
I did grow up Buddhist though, it’s been drilled into me since early on to have kindness and compassion for all people, and similarly to Buddhism, Marxism teaches that we are products of our conditions, so I tend to hate the conditions rather than the person.
I have a feeling most of us that have responded to this ‘drama’ don’t actually care about the tanks that much. But just this, it felt like a power-tripping decision to change this place from the top-down with no community input, and I still don’t fully understand the true purposes or rationale even after reading essentially all of the posts around it.
Is this pro or anti CA? I dig it, Chairman Newsom will seize control of Big Tech and nationalize them and form an alliance with China
Do we need a new occupy wall street? I think one useful thing that came about at that time was the idea of the ‘99%’, recognizing that the ultra-wealthy hold such an absurd proportion of capital that distinctions like middle class were useless. It brought to the forefront of public sentiment at the time essentially a reworded concept of bourgeoisie vs proletariat.
This article is based on another written by Matthew Levitt for the Combatting Terrorism Center at West Point (Tehran’s Tactical Knockout: Weaponized Pharmaceutical-Based Agents), is it possible there is a bias?
Just like chuds harping on about how deadly fentanyl is so police need to shoot drug dealers, this sounds like an excellent angle to make up to generate support for a war against Iran.
Reuters can be so irritating, they are great at coming off objectively. They technically have the general facts correct but the way this is framed to me shows so much of the media’s bias towards Israel. They say Israel denies the allegations of genocide, not bothering to mention there is widespread scholarly consensus on the matter, not mentioning that the majority of those killed are women and children when talking about the numbers, saying “Hamas killed 1200” when it’s likely many of the deaths of Israelis were from friendly fire.
And this paragraph:
The ban, which authorities extended for another four days until Thursday, has been in place since Friday after attacks on Israeli soccer supporters following a soccer match between visiting Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax Amsterdam.
Why were the Maccabi fans attacked? Does that not seem like relevant context for a journalist to mention? To their credit they do briefly mention, buried further down “visiting Israeli fans burned a Palestinian flag and used sticks, pipes and rocks in clashes with opponents” but the overall picture they paint makes it sound like there are roaming anti-Jewish mobs in Amsterdam.
I loved DS9, just finished Voyager, should I bother with Enterprise? I haven’t seen TNG or TOS, I should probably just go through those first.
The words of a random chud might not be consequential in itself, but I think it’s important to take note of what kind of rhetoric is going around chud circles and counter it and the dunking helps that. Maybe people are getting riled up or mad because of it but it seems like many of us don’t see it that way. The dunk tank posts do not rile me or make me mad in general, it gives me a view into a culture I don’t interact with and the comments allow discussion of how these mindsets come into being, and how to counter it.
From the message going around it sounds like this was more about reducing inter-instance admin drama. If that was part of it, fine, and overall this ‘struggle’ is not a huge deal, but the way this has been handled does feel disheartening and reduces my trust in the management of this space.
“Dunking in” = Bad
Damn, cookies and milk are racist
If ink wasn’t so expensive I’d print out and post this up around town, beautiful
Why would we love that Trump got elected? Definitely not improving the reputation your instance has now.
The decision to include the Gaza genocide in the list followed Wikipedia’s formal Request for Comment process, which began in July. Editors supporting the inclusion argued that it met the page’s criteria of events “classified by significant scholarship” as genocide. They also pointed out that the Gaza situation had stronger scholarly consensus than some existing entries on the list, such as the Darfur and Rohingya genocides.
Even pedia has agreed that it is genocide, in case any libs in your life still have doubts they love Wikipedia don’t they?
Why couldn’t there have been a discussion post about this before the changes? Obviously people against it are going to be more vocal but it seems very unpopular based on the comments, and I agree with others that the names aren’t great, purposes are confusing, and I don’t follow the logic of why these changes were made. The name change makes sense, but if this is about increasing the effort of the anti-reactionary posts I don’t believe this will achieve that.
Like others have said, we don’t have energy to effortpost all the time and simple tear-downs serve an important function for bonding and catharthis. Forcing effort in posts will just reduce posting, not increase effortposts imo. If it’s about discouraging misanthropic views, maybe too much dunking increases misanthropy for some, but to me these ‘dunks’ are an antidote to misanthropy because I can see there are others who want to shame these reactionary views, as opposed to my experience in more mainstream circles where there is wide agreement with the neoliberal or fascist worldviews.
Ridiculing reactionary thought is racist? Sure it might not always be the most effective action but how do you reach your conclusion? It is fun to attack fascism and build solidarity, why can’t revolutionary progress be fun?
Even before I made an account here from my old instance I would notice the user that always said ‘Death to America’ and saw your comments as exemplary posts of proper Hex Thought
