You are wrong that it never mattered. It failed in some cases but in others it didn’t. And it is always something that activists could embarrass governments with. In some countries, it is even something that can be used to force a government to do stuff. It is a political space and we’ll miss it when it’s gone.
I counted them as refugees because of their stated intent. They are privileged enough that they can use non-humanitarian avenues to do it. First class vs economy…
The story of the Bergs is heartbreaking. I wonder what happened to them.
The “Safe Third Country” agreement will come under stress, I think, when the shit hits the fan.
Nobody has to die if we just make billionnaires millionnaires again.
A bunch of people thinking they outsmarted the meme by asking “who made capitalism”.
A better question is “when you say humans are a virus, which humans exactly do you propose to exterminate in the name of saving the planet?” Because the bunker-state ethnonationalist, the trumpists, the Peter Thiels and the Mark Andreesens, the Dark Enlightenment and Network State and Tech Zionism neofascists, they know exactly what they mean.
The earth is big enough to support modest human life. It’s not big enough to support billionaires’ delusions of singularity. So they imagine to purge the parts of humanity that are not their particular version of white.
Don’t fall for their fascist propaganda.
If I’m not mistaken, Marx describes capital as “dead labour”. So, to answer your question: who made capitalism? Vampires, zombies, liches. The undead.
I don’t know if that town in particular is super big on Maga. Of all the Americans, these are our closest kin.
Keep the “other option” american-style bullshit out of Canadian politics. We have a multiparty democracy that can operate with minority governments and coalitions. This country really does not need a polarized American style two party system.
We are in complete agreement.
The trend I’m pushing back against is uncritical yimby-ism, that doesn’t account for the financialization of housing.
I don’t know why you’re bringing federal politics into this. But since you went there, let’s go.
Carney popularized the slogan for a supposedly easy solution to a problem that has festered under decades of neoliberal housing policy under the LPC and the CPC. I don’t have confidence in a Liberal government to go against this deeply ingrained policy. Specifically, I don’t think they have any interest in going against the richer half of the electorate that has invested in real estate. In their attempt to placate the propertied classes’ need for housing values to keep rising, they will screw this up, which I’m afraid will further inflame the resentment of young men driving them towards the open arms of the far right.
You say that because you’re a reasonable person and not a profit maximizing sociopath, sorry, I meant capitalist. So long as our system idiotically conflates a means to satisfy people’s basic needs for shelter with an investment vehicle for which line must go up, the implication that we are talking about “houses people can actually live in”, is not a given.
“Build baby build” with sensibility ofc.
Exactly. This is an example of what “build baby build” without sensibility looks like.
…and my bow
Yes, however scientific papers aren’t always linearly formatted PDFs (eg 2-columns), so pdftotext tends to be brittle.
If you only mean reading a file from a specific selection of text, I’ve never seen something that,
Okular actually does that, and with Pied I can use nice Piper voices, but the controls are very basic (start at the stop of the page, pause, stop).
ReadAloud sort of does but it requires sending the pdf to their website, which is obviously not ideal.
You say unsold condo, I say future student housing.
Jokes aside, this is why “build baby build” on its own is not going to solve the housing crisis.
A screen reader reads what’s on the screen. What I’m describing is reading a document. ReadAloud does exactly that for Firefox, I am just asking for standalone applications.
No, this is the for the Communism-fascism discourse.
When it comes to Communism-capitalism, my take is that while we are able, correct and valid to pinpoint the crimes of (big-C) Communists, we are steeped in (small-c) capitalist ideology and are completely desensitized to the ongoing systemic crimes of our own system, which are in my opinion graver than anything the (big-C) Communists ever did.
A lot of anti-latino racism really boils down to colonial anti-indigenous racism. The fascists are usually fine with white latinos, but something really stirs in them when it’s about mestizos, i.e. people whose family tree includes indigenous ancestry. Think of the stereotype of the Latin American gangster, the Mexican cartel rabid dog, like the ones in Breaking Bad. What do they look like? They never look like Ricky Martin, now, do they?
And because the German state has conflated anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism so completely, they will zero in on this, further crack down on Muslims and leftists and completely miss actual rising anti-Semitism on the Right, that actually threatens German jews. Worse still, they have created the discursive infrastructure for the anti-Semitic wackos to siphon away more ideologically susceptible people into actual dangerous anti-Semitic organizing and sympathizing. They created the conveyor belt that’s rationalizes the “well if it’s antisemitic to oppose genocide then I am one too” zero sum game.
In short, the German state killed nuance, and German jews will suffer.
