seaplant@slrpnk.netto Colorado@lemmy.world•Colorado, It’s Time We Get Serious About Traffic ViolenceEnglish2·17 days agoThe bill is SB25-281 for anyone interested in following it through the process. Here’s a good article from CPR on it too.
''Some transportation safety advocates endorse the Vision Zero method of framing traffic deaths and injuries as the result of an unsafe transportation system, and not the fault of...
individual people. They argue that changing the physical characteristics of roads to promote bicycling, walking and transit and to force drivers to drive safer is a more effective way to reduce traffic deaths and injuries.
Gorman agreed with that.
“Unless we get away from so many people driving cars, there’s no way to solve this problem,” he said. “All you can do is nibble at the edges.”
But reshaping an entire transportation system is a long, expensive and controversial process. So supporters of the bill hope that the threat of higher punishment would help make Colorado’s roads safer in the meantime.
I’m against incarceration in general, this seems like a case where increased consequences of some sort (maybe a long-term community service requirement?) would be beneficial though.

(844) 864-8341 They verify reports and share info with the community, and dispatch volunteer legal observers and immigration attorneys. Not sure if orgs in any other states have stood up something similar.

I think that’s true for the Aedes egypti species at least, they’re not native in the Americas and are a main disease-spreading species
Also KUVO, fantastic jazz and more out of Five Points, Denver
Add KUNC for that matter, broadcasting out of Greely with repeaters statewide.
Add KJAC! The Colorado Sound, alt/pop music station run by KUNC
Love it! Smash it Back (punk) and Old Grass Gnu Grass (bluegrass etc) are favorite shows. For anyone who doesn’t know, you can play back shows from the last two weeks on demand on the website.
Zach Weinersmith’s Open Borders is a fantastic (and amusingly illustrated) discussion of these types of concerns.
The US effectively does both: the lotteries are run by the states and total prizes are much less than total ticket sales, generating net revenue for the state. Winnings are taxed like other income, meaning there are federal taxes and in many states state taxes.

The irony may be pretty superficial tho, some of the other replies here point out several reasons why Nazism and Zionism/israel are actually aligned.

seaplant@slrpnk.nettoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•Please stop the bus of life, I want to get offEnglish4·8 months agoThere’s great arguments here about how a service corps could bridge divides and give all youth a better pathway from highschool into the (often predatory) worlds of job markets and higher ed, and also great arguments about why mandatory service infringes on freedom pretty significantly.
Is there a way to structure a national year of service idea that gives people the freedom to opt out yet would still get chosen by many kids from diverse backgrounds? Like how do we get kids who have had a college fund ready to go since they were born to see the benefits of spending a year building bridges? It would be a neat cultural shift.
seaplant@slrpnk.netto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL Black Americans were developing the Afro-Futurism/Black Sci-Fi genre of literature as early as the mid-19th century. Titles such as 'Blake' (1859), 'Iola Leroy' (1892), 'Imperium In Imperio (1899)English1·8 months agoIf you’re into sci-fi and Afro-futurism I really enjoyed Sweep of Stars by Maurice Broaddus (written a couple years ago; cool to see what a long history it’s building on)
seaplant@slrpnk.netto Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Light Pollution vs Streetlights & Perceived SafetyEnglish2·8 months agoWhat about some tree- or bush-like structures that have lots of small lights, one under each leaf? Having many lights that could all be positioned and angled differently would let you direct the light to only where it’s needed and create a smooth shaddow-free glow. And be pretty too! Like the Cave of Two Lovers @Gorgritch_umie_killa@aussie.zone posted. Individual lights could have different color and brightness too.
Depending on the kind of bio-engineering or fantastical biology in your world these could be completely organic, completely manufactured, or some combination like lights attached to trees/vines grown for the purpose.
This passed a couple days ago and will be signed by the Governor today! Takes effect July 2027.
