plum@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•To solve Dutch housing crisis, proposal aimed to ban the rich from buying some homes. Could it work here?1·2 years agoAn interesting idea but I feel like there are too many loopholes. What about people who incorporate holding companies for their rentals? What about people who earn their income in their corporations, and can control if they are “low income” in the year they purchase a house? If there’s a lower earning spouse, can they be the ones to list it at whatever price? Canadian cities vary greatly with their real estate markets - will the cutoff price be decided in each city? Will the cutoff only be adjusted for inflation, or will it be adjusted based on market rates?
If there is tax planning to be had, the rich will find it!
I think this is pretty funny but depending on your players, they might check all 3 for mimics! Some of us were traumatized once and now we are very suspicious…
plum@lemmy.cato Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People who live in Alberta of Canada, what is living in there like?English8·2 years agoI grew up in rural Alberta and now live in one of the big cities. I like it a lot. There are so many different people here from all walks of life. Lots on Ontario and BC transplants too!
It’s getting more expensive, but I’m glad we could still afford a home here. But industry keeps growing here, so we will see how long it lasts.
People complain about the traffic but I think most commutes top out at 1 hour here. Compared to what I’ve heard in Toronto, where many people travel 1–2 hours each way.
Weather is good - very sunny, we have seasons, warm winds break up the cold winters.
I think the politics aren’t unusual - the cities are quite liberal and the countryside is very conservative. Seems to be the same in other provinces imo.
Just like in any place - it’s mostly normal people living their lives.

I didn’t have any other reason at the time, but now I’ve started adding in to the ecosystem (AirPods, and now an iPad). The integration is really nice and smooth. I do like how “user-friendly” it is - while I can use other platforms just fine, iOS is just simple and easy.
I didn’t, really. Just kind of ended up here and it’s not bad.

Meta (parent company of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat) is releasing their Twitter alternative this week, Threads.
There’s been some discussion on Lemmy recently about Meta sniffing around forums and the fediverse, so some people have wondered if Meta will get into this space too.
plum@lemmy.cato Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some reddit communities you wish to see live and more active on lemmy?English8·2 years agoSame here - I hope more female-oriented communities get going. WitchesVsPatriarchy, TrollXChromosomes, and all the chaos of the Netflix Cinematic Universe reality shows were a blast on Reddit.
I have found !witchymemes@lemmy.world so far!
plum@lemmy.caOPtoAsk Women@lemmy.ca•How have you balanced career and family in your life?1·2 years agoIt feels like hiring a nanny or housekeeper was taboo growing up in my neck of the woods, but I think we are slowly dispelling this idea that women can/should be doing EVERYTHING.
I once got a house cleaning quote for $250 and thought it was far too expensive. But then I wondered - am I still devaluing traditional “women’s work” to be worth less than minimum wage?

plum@lemmy.cato No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why all of a sudden tech companies are not being favorable to their users?English14·2 years agoGreat point that shareholders ruin everything. I invest but I’ll avoid certain companies or industries that don’t align with my values, even if those stocks have the most potential profitability. But this seems to be a very uncommon habit in the investing world.

Obviously it was crazy for a few days, but the last week and a half has been news, memes, and real conversations. Really enjoying it here so far!

plum@lemmy.cato Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•People around the world, do you drink tap water without boiling?English3·2 years agoCanadian in a major city - yes, safe to drink right from the tap.
However, many remote communities here do not have access to safe drinking water.
Imo it is always hard to go from a movie/TV show to the book. Books create a universe inside your head, but now you’re already going into it with expectations. And when it doesn’t meet expectations, it’s disappointing.
I read The Handmaid’s Tale back around 2016, when Trump was elected. I was actually stunned that he had won - because like many others, I had missed the warning signs of a wave of populism. To me, this set the stage for The Handmaid’s Tale to feel like a very real possibility - if this guy is now in power, then what next?
It was easy to insert myself into the rather basic world of The Handmaid’s Tale especially with the humdrum details of everyday life. This dystopian world does not always look like outright torture or murder. It looks like fear, distrust, and control that has been normalized.
And quite frankly, I found that the Handmaid’s sole societal purpose of being continuously raped and impregnated is disturbing to the core. In your post, you’ve accepted that this is just part of the narrative. The abuse of female genitalia and reproduction is often overlooked in depictions of a dystopian world, so I think we’ve sanitized this brutal reality from the realm of possibilities. And yet, this is still a lived-reality for girls and women across the world today.
Corporate taxes - at least in Canada, you can have a year end any day of the year.
And yes, some older tax preparers don’t work in summer/fall.
