  • I use Backblaze personal/unlimited, and have for quite a while. A lot of the other storage options go by GB/price which is fine, but I have a ton of stuff that is irreplaceable such as my music collection of around 80k songs I converted out to flac, pictures, business docs, etc. I realize it’s not really in the selfhosted arena, but Backblaze works out for me. If you are backing up a lot of data, re-initializing multiple TB backups can be a chore. Backblaze has a program where you buy a 10 TB drive from them, they ship you your data, once transferred you can send the drive back for a full refund.

  • I don’t deal with YT much unless it’s just the only place I can find a certain tutorial I need. I used to have music videos up on YT but it became such an anchor to drag around. I do have some on PeerTube with very low traffic. The problem I see is that there is no real ‘easy’ way for users to find content they desire on PeerTube and similar venues. Even places like BandCamp which has been around forever, content creators find it difficult to get their content to the masses. MP3.com made a decent go at the market, but when the dust settled, it collapsed. So until someone comes up with a more attractive, publicized venue, YT can and will continue to be assholes. In the meantime, I don’t see places like PeerTube being a threat to YT. Casual consumers of content will always choose the easy path, and I can understand that. I did see that PeerTube is coming up with a different(?) mobile app. I hope it’s a bit more polished than the current one.

  • It can’t be censored or taken down

I know nothing of Plebbit, however, even as a huge privacy and freedom of speech advocate, I have issue with uncensored social media. There is a huge difference between freedom and freedumb. Total freedumb equals total chaos. Freedumb seems to be trending, and if all the freedumb loving people want to congregate in one place to spew their bile and hatred at each other, fine…I won’t engage. The problem occurs when freedumb loving people want to export that hatred and bile to other social media thinking just because they fly the freedumb flag, everyone else should too. I ‘helped’ beta test Gab when if first started, and immediately dropped it. It was clear early on who their clientele would be: Hate mongering racists.

Some things, in my most humble opinion, should be censored such as hate speech and overt racism. LBJ, tho he had his own issues with racism, said a truth that still stands today in that, if you give a man someone to hate, they will bend over and willingly spread their cheeks for your amusement. No one slipped me a note up in the slot while I was in utero and asked me what I wanted to be when I got out. Hmmmm…lets see…oh WHITE definitely. It’s stupidity of the highest order to hate someone for their skin pigment when I myself, like them, had no choice in the matter. It’s probably not a popular opinion but these things should be censored.

  • since I document almost everything I’ve tried

I worked in the construction field as a mech eng in hvac. The rule of thumb then was ‘If you didn’t write it down, it didn’t happen’. So that sort of carried over to my personal life as well. I document just about everything I enter into a terminal. I probably spend as much time in a notepad as I do in a terminal, but it has saved my ass on so many occasions, especially with my shit memory. And I can step by step through stuff I’ve already tried so I don’t waste time reinventing the wheel. Like right now I am in a battle with AIDE and trying getting it to write to the db ffs, so it can remember what it already scanned.

    Here’s a recent example

Yeah…that’s way over my head. LOL I mean, I know what Incus is, but beyond that, hell I do good just understanding Docker, which really is a pretty nifty way to do things on a server. Maybe one day I’ll get there, perhaps after K8s, but by that time there will be something else to learn.

    (I’m an undergrad)

What are you studying? I read your resume. I assume you are working towards something in the IT field.

  • I use Readeck for ‘read it later’ type documents or articles, and Karakeep for data preservation. The only downside that I can think of with Readeck is that there is no real ‘one click export’ of the database housing all your articles. However, you can download the entire folder containing the database and all the zip files and transport them to a new server or make it a backup. Other than that, Readeck checks my boxes. It has an iOS app and an extension for Firefox…not sure about chrome as I avoid it like the plague.
