I suspect the tricky part will be what to do if the alt account’s server doesn’t have a federated copy of the content. In that case, going to the home feed would be fine, perhaps with a notification giving the option to open the content in web. Maybe also return to the content/where you left off when switching back to the original account.

This is exactly why I think we should push for Lemmy as a whole resolving the issue, instead of dealing with vote trackers as they crop up.
I don’t see much point in opting out. The data will still be available to anyone who spins up an instance, and this could lead to a big game of whack-a-mole.
Better would be to push the Lemmy devs to find a universal solution.

Right now, everyone does have their own time. In the current system, if someone in Boston, at 3pm, were to call up someone in Seattle and ask what time it is, the person in Seattle would say noon.
OP is proposing a single time zone for the whole world. So when it’s 15:00 in Boston, it’s also 15:00 in Seattle and even 15:00 in Tokyo. It would make sense logically, but from a daily life perspective, it’d be pretty terrible - noon would no longer mean the sun is directly overhead, except for one small part of the world.

Assuming the new drive is an equal size or larger: Boot from a USB drive and use dd to clone the old drive to the new one. Then, remove the old drive and boot from the new one. You’ll also need to resize the partitions on the new drive if it’s larger.
Yes, that would be a concern, which is why I’d prefer this to be an option, ideally defaulted to the current behavior. That way, if someone wants to be sure their alt acct doesn’t potentially leak to instance admins, they can leave the feature off.
