  • The mid 1990s for me, OpenBSD came out in 1996 and Solaris was Solaris was like 1992. I was admining a Solaris SPARC station back around 1997 that had a gnarly install if I remember correctly. It was on 3.5” floppies and I still have that SPARC station and the original Solaris OS sitting in the basement collecting dust. At one point that SPARC was being used by some of us working with the PHP group to diagnose file system limits on Solaris and build PHP binaries back when I was involved in PHP development. Fun times.

My first Linux install was like Red Hat 5.2 or something and it was much nicer.

  • I watched a tourist drink a few beer at the local inn and then just throw the cans onto the lawn and keep drinking. So basically littering. That stuck in my craw. This is my town buddy, take the 5 seconds it takes to dispose of your shitty cans of your shitty mass produced beer that you usually have back home that you made sure to let everyone is far better than the local microbrew we have here in town.

Also one time we had some tourists loudly complaining about immigrants while visiting. Those aren’t immigrants you dope, they’re citizens of our country. They were born here.

On one occasion I was driving somewhere and it was along a scenic drive and I had to stop for something. A group of aging old men on motorcycles who were doing the scenic drive told me I couldn’t park in that area because it was theirs. I said get fucked, you’re in my backyard, I’ll park wherever the fuck I want. I think they thought they were intimidating because they fancied themselves a biker gang, but biker gangs usually don’t have New Balance and rental bikes as part of their aesthetic.

  • This ignores pages upon pages of lore in item descriptions, though, which goes something like, “Sweet Grass — an herb from a distant land, cultivated by the dark monks of Seringrad, and used for healing rituals. The exiled senator Myrmidon of the Kingdom of Loss is believed to have poisoned his fellow senator and former lover Zanzibart following a legislative dispute during the Anecdotes using spoiled Sweet Grass, which produces a highly toxic sludge when rotting. Restores 10% health upon use.”

This is what’s great about FS games as far as I’m concerned — for those that want to read into the lore, it’s there to go through, but for those who just want to bonk, they can just bonk, and aren’t tied down to 30 minute cinematics that lay it all out for them. It’s like an inverted Kojima game, it’s all tell-don’t-show-but-maybe-ok-show-just-a-little-bit and does a 1 minute cinematic and leaves the rest as an exercise to the player to sort out. If they want to sort it out, they can, and if not, they can just continue to bonk and maybe later on put on some YouTuber’s three hour long explanation about the game they just finished and have it play in the background while they barbecue. And yeah, sure a bunch of t might be vague and contradictory, but goddamn it, it gets people talking more than the 30 minute exposition-heavy cinematic ever could.
