Flaky European friends… The ones that stuck with Ukraine after the US abandoned them?

Didn’t ask how you know. But how you understand.
Sure you don’t know someone else is sapient. But you treat them as if they are

How do you know it’s not a dolphin in one of their hidden underwater dolphin tech cities?
Literally more likely than a “take the average of the internet and put it in a blender” machine gaining a soul

How do you currently understand whether the thing you’re talking to possesses sentience or not?

We’re so used to massive IP adaptations being dog shit that any decent show would have been a quite pleasant surprise.
We got so much more, it’s true to its roots without just being a lazy carbon copy or recycling things we’ve seen before. It’s creates a believable corner of the fallout world we haven’t seen before but slips flawlessly into the universe.

It’s difficult to describe the world in the pre-social media age. There was a time when Google was just a cool software company building cool things, and the don’t be evil motto was probably genuine.
Software used to be an thing that you would buy and use if you needed it. It came on a disk. It wasn’t this ever pervasive network of always on tools living in our homes and devices working to cultivate the ultimate consumer unit

Unlike how corporations behave

But why involve them at all? Why assume they are even acting in good faith?

You comfortable with how it’s being enforced currently?

Unlike trustworthy corporations
