I think the theory that they spoke German, which Harker understood but (quite understandably, given the circumstances) failed to mention in his diary, while at first seeming far-fetched does provide an acceptable explanation. Whether this was Stoker’s intention when he wrote the chapter, or simply an oversight, is of course another question.

Has anyone discussed the question why the girls and the count speak English here, or if they don’t, why he’s able to unterstand them, and why he doesn’t go into the language issue, as he did at great length in the previous chapters?
