I really want Pebble back but it’s not Eric’s it’s ours it’s open source. If Eric wants to make devices that are compatible and extend the platform I’m in support. But it can’t be his because he sold it 9 years ago.
I hope he can see that the best way forward is to treat the os like Linux and then build is devices to work with that OS and platform.
Update: https://ericmigi.com/blog/pebble-rebble-and-a-path-forward
Eric made a blog post that has some great responses but also uses some divisive language that unfortunately wont help the situation. Its clear that both sides mean well, there are just some personality conflicts that need to be sorted out because its not their platform. Its ours.
I’d say that the archive of the Pebble watchapps and watchable before pulling the plug are fair game and should be made available to Core.
It’s all available here too https://github.com/aveao/PebbleArchive
Anything modified by Rebble after that point is up to the Rebble team to decide if they’re willing to share. My only wish is that these changes are publicly available for non-commercial use, otherwise it’s just another walled-garden.
I dont think its up to Rebble, unless their contributions are closed source. The agreement as posted by Eric seems reasonable, and should support both the foundation and biz.
You both just need to work together, pebble software/hardware is way too small for you both to fight over this. Seriously.
At the end of the day, I want stuff to be open source and serviceable if something ever goes belly up, including stuff like the watch battery, buttons, etc. too much smart stuff goes in the landfill imo. Let’s get back to the repairable era from the 90s and before.
Valve has the right idea with their various repairable hardware products and mostly open software afaik.
