RetroGaming@lemmy.world•PlayStation 1 emulator DuckStation changes license for no commercial use and no derivatives
32·1 year agoVery aware of him and his attacks on other emulator authors (remember VirtualJaguar?) but was not aware of him being a transphobe. Is there somewhere I can read about that that you’re aware of?

Games@lemmy.world•Gacha games are out of control. Gambling shouldn't be so widespread
2·1 year agoIt was also created long long before developers had these predatory business models, where it basically shielded the industry from having goverment oversight on violence in games back in the 90s and such.

3·1 year agoYes, as I mentioned in my comment.
MK2 onwards did indeed have blood.

55·1 year agoI wouldn’t say self-regulation has “literally never worked once in history”, but yes, not often. I would point to the ESRB as an example of self-regulation working in the games industry and being a positive for both the industry itself avoiding government regulation and for players. There are other examples too, but yes, they would be rare wins in general.

Games@lemmy.world•Video Game Developers Are Leaving The Industry And Doing Something, Anything Else
22·1 year ago20 year industry vet here. When I started, it was in a company that was hiring nothing but people that have never worked in games before (and they did not tell us this, like some bad reality show). Of the ~200+ people I worked with there when I started, I would very generously estimate maybe only 10-15 of us still in the industry. To be fair, conditions in the industry have gotten a lot better since most of those people left it. The days of doing 80+ hours a week are long gone for most of us as far as I can tell.
It’s really all about loving who you are working with. Even if you hate the project or the hours, just enjoying being around the right people makes a huge difference. Writing that is making me realize just how many of my favorite people and closest friends are now elsewhere and damn, I miss them.

Ubisoft Connect is supposed to update itself when first launched. Which games specifically are you referring to with broken versions?

2·1 year agoRunning Steam in Big Picture mode on boot basically turns it into a more compatible/faster Steam Deck. I’d be more interested in installing Linux on it (being a Linux guy myself) if it wasn’t for losing out on things like frame generation that you get from the Windows graphics drivers.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What instances do you block and/or contain the most trolls?
1·1 year agoI’ve just kind of been learning how to just… not be tempted to respond to people like that. I think using Redlib - the privacy frontend for Reddit - has conditioned me to stop because it has no direct way to comment on issues or anything like that, so I’ve been less tempted to get into online slapfights with people that aren’t worth the time.
jay@mbin.zerojay.com:443toTelevision@lemmy.world•Is the Hand Maids Tale worth the watch?
2·1 year agoI gave it a shot. I had to stop watching it after maybe four episodes. Not because it was bad or any sort of qualitative reason, but I just found that world in the show is so diametrically opposed to my way of thinking… and really didn’t enjoy being in it, so I had to tap out. It’s possible you might enjoy the show though so I would say at least give it a shot.

I wasn’t aware that we needed to adhere to the academic sense here on fedi.
Exo’s been working on these packs for-EVER. He’s done so much for the preservation of DOS games over the years.

This is why you have a staging environment and backups for the very rare case where something goes wrong. I’ve only had to roll back a container maybe 3 times in 5 years at this point and can just roll back to a previous snapshot in a few minutes.
