    Yeah, the original quote never made sense to me. As you age and get closer to death you naturally become more empathetic to the people around you, not less.

      The quote implies that you gain wealth and privilege as you age, eventually to the point where you’re a home owner paranoid of their own neighbors. The idea is that you’re a white person living in an imperialist country and that you were a leftist during college, but afterwards you got a management job at your dad’s factory and realized capitalism is good, actually.
